Casino Royale breaks record for opening night!
Casino Royale, the 21st James Bond film, took $3,324,533 on its opening day in the UK, distributor Columbia Pictures has said. According to Columbia Pictures, this figure is more than any other film in the popular 007 franchise.
The last Bond film, Die Another Day, took $2,151,168 on its opening night in November 2002.
In another coup for the long-running franchise's producers, 007 has finally been granted permission to play in China.
Chinese authorities exercise notoriously tough censorship laws and Bond has usually fallen foul of stringent rules on sexual and violent content. A release is expected in January 2007.
The film sees Daniel Craig play the role of James Bond and Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen play the role of 007's nemesis Le Chiffre.
Craig, who was chosen to replace Pierce Brosnan in the 007 role last year, has faced criticism from a small section of James Bond fans.
But early media reviews have praised his polished and complex performance.
Other stars with a role in the film include Eva Green, Judi Dench, Jeffrey Wright, Giancarlo Giannini, Caterina Murino and Jesper Christensen.
Directed by Martin Campbell, Casino Royale had its world premiere at the Odeon Leicester Square on Tuesday 14th November.
Craig, 38, is the sixth actor to play the super-spy after Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton and Pierce Brosnan.
Die Another Day, directed by Lee Tamahori, went onto take just over $420m at the global box office.

Produced by Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli (Eon Productions), BOND 22 (title to be announced) is scheduled for release November 7th 2008. Photography will start in 2008, at locations to be announced. It will be British actor Daniel Craig’s second outing as James Bond, following his debut film "Casino Royale" released November 17th 2006. He is the sixth actor to play the 007 role in the franchise.
